Biological Barcodes New methods of species identification

چکیده
In the mid 18th century, Swedish naturalist Carol Linnaeus’s work Systema Naturae introduced the binomial (two-part) system of biological nomenclature, set forth descriptions of some 7700 plant and 4000 animal species, and thereby laid the foundations of modern taxonomy. In the 230 years since them, researchers have cataloged a total of some 1.7 million species of eukaryotes, or organisms whose cells possess clear cellular nuclei (a group that includes plants, fungi, and animals). Still, that figure is not high when one considers that the number of living eukaryote species is estimated at least 10 million!

A New Method for Species Identification via Protein-Coding and Non-Coding DNA Barcodes by Combining Machine Learning with Bioinformatic Methods
Species identification via DNA barcodes is contributing greatly to current bioinventory efforts. The initial, and widely accepted, proposal was to use the protein-coding cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) region as the standard barcode for animals, but recently non-coding internal transcribed spacer (ITS) genes have been proposed as candidate barcodes for both animals and plants. However, ach...
متن کاملDNA barcodes for biosecurity: invasive species identification.
Biosecurity encompasses protecting against any risk through 'biological harm', not least being the economic impact from the spread of pest insects. Molecular diagnostic tools provide valuable support for the rapid and accurate identification of morphologically indistinct alien species. However, these tools currently lack standardization. They are not conducive to adaptation by multiple sectors ...
متن کاملPhylogenetic Assessment of Some Species of Crocus Genus Using DNA Barcoding
DNA barcoding is a simple method for the identification of any species using a short genetic sequence from a standard genome section. The present study aimed at examining the nuclear and chloroplast diversity as well as the phylogenetic relationships of eight species of saffron including four spring-flowering and five autumn-flowering species from different parts of Iran, using the nuclear barc...
متن کاملBiological Identifications Through DNA Barcodes
Although much biological research depends upon species diagnoses, taxonomic expertise is collapsing. We are convinced that the sole prospect for a sustainable identification capability lies in the construction of systems that employ DNA sequences as taxon ‘barcodes’. It was established previously that the mitochondrial gene cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) can serve as the core of a global bioident...
متن کاملDNA mini-barcodes.
Conventional DNA barcoding uses an approximately 650 bp DNA barcode of the mitochondrial gene COI for species identification in animal groups. Similar size fragments from chloroplast genes have been proposed as barcode markers for plants. While PCR amplification and sequencing of a 650 bp fragment is consistent in freshly collected and well-preserved specimens, it is difficult to obtain a full-...
متن کاملUtility of Dna Barcodes in Identification and Delimitation of Beetle Species, with Insights into Coi Protein Structure across the Animal Kingdom
Species are the fundamental units of biological diversity, but their identification and delimitation is often difficult. The difficulties are pronounced in diverse taxa such as insects. DNA barcodes, short standardized segments of the genome, have recently become a popular tool for identifying specimens to species, and are increasingly used as one of the sources of information for species delim...
